Italy student visa: the €10,179.85 funds requirement and how to prove it
Italy's study visa process runs through Universitaly pre-enrolment, university validation and a consular appointment. The step that now catches many applicants out is money: the financial requirement has risen sharply.

The amount
You must show €10,179.85 per year of study, up from €6,947.33 in the previous cycle. Some posts divide it by 12, others by 13, so their monthly figures differ, always show the full annual amount.
Where the money may come from
- Your own account (preferred).
- Your family: parents, or relatives up to the fourth degree where the post allows it (India and Pakistan do; Dhaka accepts only parents among relatives).
- Italian institutions or universities, or foreign institutions the consulate considers reliable.
- A scholarship, only once it has been formally awarded. "Applied" or "eligible" does not count.
Funds must be lawful and traceable. Several posts, such as Islamabad, refuse bank guarantees and look at regular funds rather than a one-off deposit made just before the appointment.
What each post asks for
| Post | Typical evidence |
|---|---|
| USA (New York) | Personal bank letter, or family statements + notarised Affidavit of Support + birth certificate |
| UK (London) | Your last 3 months of statements, or your parents' + birth certificate + a parent's passport copy |
| India (VFS) | 6 months of stamped statements; sponsor's statements and 2 years of tax returns; sponsorship letter |
| Pakistan | Sponsor affidavit (amount, source, duration) apostilled and translated into Italian; NADRA family certificate; sponsor's tax returns, payslips and statements |
| Bangladesh | 12 months of statements from a bank in Bangladesh (applicant and sponsor) |
The consulate assesses "migration risk"
A validated pre-enrolment does not guarantee a visa. The consulate looks at your socio-economic situation, your previous studies and whether the course fits them. That is why a clear motivation letter: required in Pakistan, requested as a one-page statement of purpose in India, matters as much as the bank statements.
Deadlines and timing
Apply for the visa before the deadline set by the ministerial circular (30 November for bachelor's, master's and AFAM courses of the current intake), and earlier if your university says so. Processing can take up to 90 days and cannot be expedited.
After arrival
Apply for the residence permit within eight working days. You may work up to 20 hours a week (1,040 hours a year). To renew, you must pass at least one exam in the first year and two per year after that, and apply at least 90 days before expiry.
