Profession libérale and entrepreneur visa: writing a business plan that convinces
If you want to freelance or run your own business in France, the business plan is the heart of your file. It is less about ambition than about showing a real, viable activity, described with clear and grounded numbers.

What this route is
The entrepreneur and profession libérale route is for people who will carry out an independent activity in France: freelancers, consultants, liberal professions or small business founders. The authorities assess whether the activity is viable and whether it can provide you with sufficient income.
Your business plan is the main evidence for both questions, supported by your background and any existing clients.
How an examiner reads your plan
Think of the reader as someone checking coherence. They want to understand what you do, who pays you, why France and whether the numbers add up. A plan that answers those questions in order is far more effective than a long marketing document.
The sections that matter most
- Your activity and services, described simply and concretely.
- Why France: your market, your clients or your professional ties there.
- Your background: the experience that makes the activity credible.
- Market analysis, including a few real competitors and how you position yourself.
- Income to date, if you already work independently.
- Projections over several years, with clear assumptions.
- Financing, cash flow and expenses, including French social contributions and insurance.
- Practical set-up: business registration and professional insurance.
Keeping your numbers credible
Optimistic projections without justification are one of the most common weaknesses. Base your figures on your actual rates, your current or signed clients and realistic workloads. Explain each assumption in a sentence. A modest, well-argued plan is more convincing than an ambitious one with no basis.
Make sure the income in your plan is consistent with your bank statements and any contracts you provide.
The cover letter
A one or two page cover letter introduces you and summarises the plan for the consulate. It should tell the same story as the plan in a few paragraphs: who you are, what you will do, why in France and why it will work.
Getting started
The Entrepreneur Visa Kit provides a business plan template structured in the order an examiner reads it, a matching cover letter and an English guide explaining each section and how to keep plan, letter and evidence consistent.
